Smart And Brown Lathe Manual
My Smart & Brown 1024 arrived today, now I can begin the assess, clean and sort out process. FTY, I do have the topslide and all the compound parts and they are undamaged, they were removed to prevent damage in transit. The machine is fully loaded and came with:Two chucksTravelling and fixed steadiesTaper turning attachmentCarriage stopCollet closerDROAnd has a Hardinge style power traverse motor that was fitted on at some point in its life.At 2,800lbs it is a real beast to move and lift luckily a friend arrived to help, many thanks to Jerry Z.DavidBelow is the massive bed. A friend of mine bought one in Toronto a couple of weeks back.He paid around $2k.If I didn't have the Hendey project He would have never gotten the chance to buy it!It is a very nice lathe. His has a very slight amount of wear on the bed near the headstock, but not out of line with the age of the machine. The only issue he has is that someone has had the spindle out and we think that it was re-assembled wrong.Unfortunately he doesn't have the taper attachment.David, what are you going to use to power the machine?
Cowells 90E Centre Lathe for Modelling, used. Cowells 90E Centre Lathe for modelling. Apologies for p&p price, weight dictates. New Year Sale!! Model lathe Good luck and happy bidding. Details: modelling, cowells, centre, lathe, included, fathers, large, listings, next, weeks. See complete description. Notify me before the end of the auction. I had already found the lathes.co.uk site. Tony the site owner sells some spares if needed and also has some manuals available but I think they are rather expensive at £38 + p+p for a manual that doesn't just cover my lathe but others as well. I found a Yahoo group for the SABEL but it doesn't seem very active at the moment.
The motor in my friends is 3ph 575 volt 3 speed. He is going to use a 220volt motor with a vfd.Pete. Karl,The shipping was about $1,750.Here is the story on the lathe:As I said I have been shopping one for some time and doing the standard buying selling upgrading in the search for the perfect lathe (ha, is there such a thing?). My path: Rivett 918, Sheldon 10', Rivett 608, Hardinge TL, S&B Model A and the the S&B 1024. Along the way there was a Holbrook Minor the seller backed of and refused to honor the sale.Anyway, a dear friend in in England (also an enthusiast) collected the lathe arranged for it's shipping and crated it up.I think for all of us there are 'bucket' lathes (machines we would like in our bucket), some of mine are: Rivett 1020, Hendey T&G, Hardinge TL, Rivett 608, Holbrrok Minor, Holbrook Model B and of course the S&B 1024 the list goes on.After searching for a couple of years the 1024 surfaced at the right price with the right accessories and I purchased (jumped on) it.
The shipping took 5-6 weeks, cost a bit more than anticipated it had been quoted door to door but somehow still had $350 tacked on for this and thatSo the lathe is here now, many thanks to my friend who did the heavy lifting in England and now I have what I imagine to be one of a very few 1024's in the US and possibly Canada. I'm sure there are more in Canada than here.
In fact anyone who has one in North America I would like to hear from.David. Steve,If your ever in town get in touch and make some chips! In another S&B thread there was a discussion of weight and capacity comparing the 1020, a Holbrook and the EE to a 1024. Richard who had a CVA (EE copy) chimed in with the following:Quote:Originally Posted by Clive603Long time since I saw one but I think the Holbrook C10 actually manages to be beefier and heavier than the Smart and Brown 1024. Mr Holbrook he say 'use twice as much iron as everyone else'.Hafta say that picking up the 1024 VSL and shifting it round the back to my shop was about as much as I wanted to handle. Its actually a bit heavier than my Pratt & Whitney 12' Model B.

If anyone wants to get hold of my 1024 VSL they will have to prise it out of my cold dead hands. Darned glad I didn't succumb to one of a few 'Hardinge velly cheap today sir' deals. A friend of mine bought one in Toronto a couple of weeks back.He paid around $2k.If I didn't have the Hendey project He would have never gotten the chance to buy it!so that one finally sold! It been out there for a long time, they are great lathe but the spindle and wear scarred me off and there's the cost of a belt i think (big flat belt).I didn't think of the spindle not being installed properly but there are definitely spindle issues - you could move the spindle mount several thou by leaning on it. Still, all problems that can be solved.new bearings aren't to much money if it needs it but irrc that type requires some special equipment to install/set up? Not sure, remember reading something about themIt sure its a beastly lathe.
